Ready made ecommerce stores: what the different names mean

Ready made, premade, prebuilt, readymade, turnkey. Five labels are in circulation for roughly one product, and the label you searched changes which sellers you meet rather than what you get.

Ecomma buys ecommerce businesses and runs them, so we watch this end of the market without selling into it. The naming confusion here is not accidental, and untangling it is most of the work.

One product, five labels

Ready made and readymade emphasise that nothing is left to assemble. Common phrasing outside North America.

Premade and pre made say the same thing with a different prefix, and tend to appear on marketplace listings rather than agency sites.

Prebuilt is the phrase the store-building services themselves favour, so searching it surfaces more sellers who assemble to order.

Turnkey is borrowed from property and franchising, where it carries a promise of an operating concern. Applied to a shop that has never traded, that inherited promise does not survive the move.

None of the five tells you whether anyone has ever bought anything. That is the fact the vocabulary is quietly not addressing.

Ecommerce store and Shopify store are different searches

Searching for a Shopify store narrows to one platform, which is useful when you already know you want Shopify's app ecosystem and its checkout.

Searching for an ecommerce store or an ecommerce website leaves the platform open, so results mix in WooCommerce, BigCommerce and custom builds. Migration between them later is possible and rarely pleasant, which makes the choice worth making deliberately at the start.

For an established business the platform matters far less than the customers do. For an empty shop the platform is most of what you are buying, since nothing else has happened yet.

What actually moves the price

The adjective moves it hardly at all. What moves it sits underneath.

Trading history. Orders that reconcile against money received change the item from a build into a business, and change the pricing basis from a fee to a multiple of profit.

Whether the products are yours. A catalogue pulled from an open wholesale directory can be pulled again by anyone else tomorrow. Exclusivity, an own-brand label or a negotiated supply agreement is worth real money precisely because it cannot be copied in an afternoon.

How demand arrives. A shop earning through search, email and returning customers holds its value better than one whose revenue tracks yesterday's ad spend.

Who keeps it running. Ask what stops working the week after the seller leaves. On an empty shop the answer is nothing, because nothing had started. On a trading business it is frequently the largest risk in the transaction.

Where Ecomma fits, and where we do not

We buy ecommerce businesses that already have customers, operate them, and sell them on with the option to keep our team running the marketing and operations afterwards. 80+ acquisitions since 2022. Assembling shops to order is not something we do, so if that is what you came for, the services ranking alongside this page serve you better than we would.

Where the setup hours genuinely are the obstacle, buying an assembled shop is a fair purchase, provided you price the traffic separately and go in knowing that part is still ahead of you.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a ready made and a prebuilt store?

Nothing reliable. Sellers use whichever phrase reads better, and neither word tells you whether the shop has ever taken an order. Judge the listing on its trading history rather than on its adjective.

Does turnkey mean the store is already earning?

No. Turnkey describes how little assembly is left before the shop can accept an order. A business with customers and a shop that merely functions are separate claims, and only the first is worth a multiple.

Why do ready made ecommerce stores cost so little?

Because assembling one takes hours and the components are available to anybody. The price reflects the labour saved. Where a listing costs far more, something else is being sold with it, and that something is worth identifying precisely.

Should I buy a ready made store or build my own?

If the setup hours are the obstacle, buying one is reasonable. If finding customers is the obstacle, neither option addresses it, and you are choosing between two versions of the same starting line.
